This is a full tapestry-crochet pattern. The sign is worked INTO the front panel in single crochet with all three yarns carried inside the stitches — never appliquéd or sewn on — so the design shows through softly in reverse inside the bag and the surface stays one flat, hard-wearing fabric. The kangaroo is charted stitch by stitch from the real warning-sign silhouette: tail sweeping left to a fine point, one ear up, forepaw tucked at his chest, standing on his big hind foot, with the little yellow eyelet at his chest exactly where the silhouette puts it.
Finished size: about 38 cm wide × 40 cm tall, with a gusset about 5 cm deep. The picture panel is 72 stitches × 76 rows, with a plain back panel, a gusset strip down the sides and under the base, and two crocheted strap handles (36 cm straps, about 14 cm drop) sewn on with a load-spreading X-box join. The bag is finished unlined; the pattern includes an optional simple fabric lining using your own cotton fabric.

You will need: DK (8 ply) cotton — Warm Stone 335 m (4 × 50 g balls), Sign Yellow 78 m (1 ball), Black 72 m (1 ball); 6 balls, 485 m in total. 4.0 mm crochet hook. Gauge: 19 stitches × 20 rows = 10 cm in single crochet. Yarn needle, scissors, pins. No bought handles or hardware — everything structural is crocheted and sewn with the yarn itself; webbing straps are given as an optional variation only.
Skill level: confident beginner and up. The stitches are the plainest in crochet; the only concentration is following the chart. Written in US terms throughout, with the UK/Australian translation given (every “sc” here is a UK/AU double crochet).
