This premium pattern set has THREE pieces that belong together: a hooded wombat romper, a mini wombat who rides in its pocket, and an oval play mat with one small wombat face in the middle — a very Australian baby gift to make and treasure.
🧶 THE ROMPER
Knitted top-down in the round (raglan yoke, no seams to rub), in sturdy wombat grey-brown with a warm cream tummy. The clever part: the pocket is KNITTED INTO the body as you go — its cream front IS the tummy panel — and it opens at the top, ready for its passenger. The hood is picked up at the neck and carries the wombat’s broad face worked in intarsia from a full chart: a wide cream muzzle, a big soft deep-brown nose and round eyes, with small round ears on top. A short button placket (two wooden-look buttons) makes dressing easy, the legs end in soft ribbed cuffs with NO enclosed feet so little toes stay free — and there is deliberately no tail, because a wombat’s tail is barely there at all.
🐾 THE MINI WOMBAT
A stocky little wombat (about 13 cm sitting) with a cream intarsia belly, a broad cream muzzle and an embroidered face only — no safety eyes, no small parts — sized to ride in the romper’s pocket with his head peeking over the rim.
🌿 THE PLAY MAT
An oval mat (about 66 × 57 cm) worked flat in grey-brown with a cream border ring picked up around the edge, and one SMALL wombat face worked in intarsia from its own chart in the centre only — cheeks, sparkle eyes and all — with calm plain knitting around it. Made for tummy time.
