Description

🦘🪧 KANGAROO ROAD SIGN BLANKET — KNITTING PATTERN 🪧🦘

Every Aussie road trip has one: the yellow diamond on the side of the highway, warning that a kangaroo is about to make a decision. Now he can live across the back of your sofa at full throw size. This pattern knits a 100 × 130 cm (39 × 51 in) blanket in one piece — no sewing up — with the whole sign worked into the centre panel: yellow diamond, black border, and the kangaroo himself mid-hop in jet black on warm stone corners, framed in moss stitch with bold black and sign-yellow bands at each end.

🧶 CHARTED FROM THE REAL SIGN
This is not a generic kangaroo. The colour chart was traced stitch by stitch from the actual Australian warning-sign silhouette: the long tail sweeping left and ending in its fine point, the one ear up, the little forepaw tucked under his chest, and the big hind leg standing on its long flat foot. The blanket’s panel is that chart scaled up exactly — every chart cell knitted as a 2 × 2 stitch block — giving a panel of 180 stitches × 216 rows (about 82 × 80 cm of pure road sign) where the scaled panel matches the traced chart cell for cell. Knit stitches are counted, not guessed: the pattern gives you the full colour chart AND every one of the 216 panel rows written out in full, run by run, generated from the same chart data — the chart, the written rows and the yarn table can never disagree.

Here is how it starts:
Row 1 (RS): Moss 20 A, K86 A, K8 C, K86 A, Moss 20 A [220 sts]
Row 2 (WS): Moss 20 A, P86 A, P8 C, P86 A, Moss 20 A [220 sts]
… and how it ends:
Row 216 (WS): Moss 20 A, P86 A, P8 C, P86 A, Moss 20 A [220 sts]
(A = Warm Stone, B = Black, C = Sign Yellow. The Moss 20 at each end is the moss-stitch frame, worked right alongside the panel.)

✂️ HOW IT IS MADE
The blanket is worked flat in one piece on a long circular needle, from the bottom band up: a moss-stitch end band in Sign Yellow, Black and Warm Stone; then the panel section, where the moss frame runs up both sides of the intarsia chart; then a mirrored top band, and cast off. The panel is intarsia style — each colour block has its own small bobbin, and the pattern explains the twist-and-lock colour change in plain words before you reach the chart. There are just three colours and 18 separate working lengths in total, all mapped out for you in the yarn table. Finishing is weave-in, soak, and block to size — the pattern walks you through supporting a heavy wet blanket and pinning the diamond’s diagonals equal.

🧮 EVERY STITCH COUNTED
220 stitches × 350 rows in total at a gauge of 22 sts × 27 rows = 10 cm in DK stocking stitch — 77,000 stitches, every one of them counted in the pattern. The yarn table sits right up front, counted from the chart itself: about 1,274 metres in total — Warm Stone 751 m (9 balls — it works the panel corners, the whole moss frame and most of both end bands), Sign Yellow 353 m (4 balls), Black 170 m (2 balls). Fifteen 50 g balls of DK make the whole blanket.

🧶 YOU WILL NEED: DK (8 ply) yarn in Warm Stone, Sign Yellow and Black (15 × 50 g balls), a 4.0 mm circular needle 80–100 cm long, a yarn needle, and blocking pins or wires. Nothing else — there are no notions to buy for this pattern.

🎁 SKILL LEVEL: confident beginner and up. The knitting is plain stocking stitch and moss stitch; the only concentration is following the chart, and the written rows mean you never have to. US terms throughout, with a UK/Australian note in the abbreviations table.

A brilliant make for road-trip nostalgists, expat Aussies, man caves, caravan travellers and anyone who has ever braked for a roo — one of six Kangaroo Road Sign makes in our shop, all worked from this same charted silhouette.

📥 INSTANT DOWNLOAD: one print-ready A4 PDF, 13 pages — cover, before-you-start with gauge and abbreviations, the counted yarn table, a full guide to reading the chart and working intarsia, the complete panel chart across two pages, all 216 written rows with the band instructions, and finishing, blocking and care notes. No physical item will be posted.
