🦘🪧 KANGAROO ROAD SIGN CUSHION COVER — KNITTING PATTERN 🪧🦘
Every Aussie road trip has one: the yellow diamond on the side of the highway, warning that a kangaroo is about to make a decision. Now he can live on your sofa instead. This pattern knits a 40 × 40 cm (16 in) cushion cover with the whole sign worked into the front — yellow diamond, black border, and the kangaroo himself mid-hop in jet black on a warm stone background, finished with a plain envelope back that slips off for washing.
🧶 CHARTED FROM THE REAL SIGN
This is not a generic kangaroo. The colour chart was traced stitch by stitch from the actual Australian warning-sign silhouette: the long tail sweeping left and ending in its fine point, the one ear up, the little forepaw tucked under his chest, and the big hind leg standing on its long flat foot. The chart is 90 stitches × 108 rows, drawn on a proper knitting-gauge grid (stitches are wider than they are tall), so the diamond stays a true diamond and the roo stays in proportion. Knit stitches are counted, not guessed: the pattern gives you the full colour chart AND every one of the 108 rows written out in full, run by run, generated from the same chart data — the chart, the written rows and the yarn table can never disagree.
Here is how it starts:
Row 1 (RS): K43 A, K4 C, K43 A [90 sts]
Row 2 (WS): P42 A, P6 C, P42 A [90 sts]
… and how it ends:
Row 108 (WS): P43 A, P4 C, P43 A [90 sts]
(A = Warm Stone, B = Black, C = Sign Yellow.)
✂️ HOW IT IS MADE
The front is worked flat in stocking stitch, one panel, intarsia style — each colour block has its own small bobbin, and the pattern explains the twist-and-lock colour change in plain words before you reach the chart. There are just three colours and 10 separate working lengths in total, all mapped out for you in the yarn table. The back is two plain Warm Stone panels with an envelope overlap (no zip, no buttons needed); the pattern also gives an optional buttoned flap if you prefer one — buttons are a standard craft-shop notion and are not part of the pattern. You will need your own 40 cm cushion insert.
🧮 EVERY STITCH COUNTED
Front panel 90 sts × 108 rows at a gauge of 22 sts × 27 rows = 10 cm in DK stocking stitch. The yarn table sits right up front, counted cell by cell from the chart itself: 24,840 stitches and about 413 metres in total — Warm Stone 325 m (4 balls, it works the front background AND both back panels), Sign Yellow 63 m (1 ball), Black 25 m (1 ball). Six 50 g balls of DK make the whole cover.
🧶 YOU WILL NEED: DK (8 ply) yarn in Warm Stone, Sign Yellow and Black (6 × 50 g balls), 4.0 mm needles, a yarn needle, and a 40 cm cushion insert (yours to supply).
🎁 SKILL LEVEL: confident beginner and up. The knitting is plain stocking stitch; the only concentration is following the chart, and the written rows mean you never have to. US terms throughout, with a UK/Australian note in the abbreviations table.
A brilliant make for road-trip nostalgists, expat Aussies, man caves, kids’ rooms and anyone who has ever braked for a roo — one of six Kangaroo Road Sign makes in our shop, all worked from this same charted silhouette.
