🦘🪧 KANGAROO ROAD SIGN BEANIE & SCARF SET — KNITTING PATTERN 🪧🦘
Every Aussie road trip has one: the yellow diamond on the side of the highway, warning that a kangaroo is about to make a decision. Now he can keep your ears warm too. This pattern knits a matching two-piece set — a slouchy beanie in three adult sizes with the whole sign worked across the front above a black ribbed brim, and a long 20 × 160 cm scarf with the full sign as an intarsia panel near one end and a bold black and sign-yellow striped garter cuff at the other.
🧶 CHARTED FROM THE REAL SIGN
This is not a generic kangaroo. Both charts are reductions of the master chart traced stitch by stitch from the actual Australian warning-sign silhouette — the same chart that fronts our Kangaroo Road Sign cushion and blanket: the long tail sweeping left and ending in its fine point, the one ear up, the little forepaw tucked under his chest, and the big hind leg standing on its long flat foot. Mapped back against that master chart, the beanie’s 46 × 55 motif agrees on 94.05% of its cells and keeps 99.0% of the kangaroo; the scarf’s 44 × 53 panel agrees on 93.93% and keeps 97.6%. Knit stitches are counted, not guessed: the pattern gives you both colour charts AND every row written out in full, run by run, generated from the same chart data — the charts, the written rows and the yarn tables can never disagree.
Here is how the scarf panel starts (and ends):
Panel row 1 (RS): K21 A, K2 C, K21 A [44 sts]
Panel row 53 (RS): K21 A, K2 C, K21 A [44 sts]
(A = Warm Stone, B = Black, C = Sign Yellow. The beanie’s rows are written for all three sizes as 104 (112, 120).)
✂️ HOW IT IS MADE
Both pieces are worked flat and in plain stocking stitch — the beanie seamed up the back at the end, the scarf knitted in one piece from its striped cuff to its black end band. The colourwork is intarsia style: each block of colour has its own small bobbin, and the pattern explains the twist-and-lock colour change in plain words before you reach the charts. Each panel takes just seven bobbins — four Warm Stone corner fields, one Sign Yellow for the diamond, and two Black, for the border ring and the kangaroo himself. The beanie’s crown is seven decrease rows with the same repeat count in every size; the scarf’s garter selvedges keep it lying flat.
🧮 EVERY STITCH COUNTED
The whole set is 27,813 stitches, every one of them counted in the pattern. The yarn tables sit right up front, counted from the charts: about 465 metres in total — Warm Stone 377 m (5 balls — it works both bodies, the panel corners and the crown), Sign Yellow 35 m (2 balls), Black 53 m (2 balls). Nine 50 g balls of DK make the whole set, and the beanie figures are worked out for the largest size so one purchase covers every size.
🧶 YOU WILL NEED: DK (8 ply) yarn in Warm Stone, Sign Yellow and Black (9 × 50 g balls), 4.0 mm needles, a yarn needle, and blocking pins or wires for the scarf. Nothing else — there are no notions to buy for this pattern.
🎁 SKILL LEVEL: confident beginner and up. The knitting is plain stocking stitch, rib and garter stitch; the only concentration is following the chart, and the written rows mean you never have to. US terms throughout, with a UK/Australian note in the abbreviations table.
A brilliant make for road-trip nostalgists, expat Aussies, footy-free winter weekends and anyone who has ever braked for a roo — one of six Kangaroo Road Sign makes in our shop, all worked from this same charted silhouette.
