π¦ DROP BEAR BEANIE β KNITTING PATTERN (PDF DOWNLOAD)
Every Aussie knows to look up before walking under a gum tree. The drop bear β the koala’s fanged, drop-from-above cousin β is our favourite national tall tale, and now he is a beanie. Koala-grey chunky knit, two round ears on top, a deep ribbed brim, and a row of little white fangs grinning along the front edge, right over your forehead. Wear it anywhere gum trees grow β or anywhere they don’t, and enjoy explaining it.
The beanie is knitted in the round from the brim up, in two sizes β Child and Adult β with every single round counted for you: the 2 x 2 rib brim, the plain body, and the eight-wedge crown shaping, round by round, down to the last 8 stitches.
β HONEST DETAILS
β’ Everything on this hat is KNITTED. The fangs are knitted directly onto the front edge of the finished brim, one at a time β picked up, worked over 3 little rows from the included chart, and fastened off in place. They are part of the hat: not sewn on, not glued, nothing to peel or come off in the wash.
β’ The ears are picked up from the finished crown and knitted in place in seed stitch β no sewing them on, and the ear base is as strong as the hat.
β’ There are no eyes, buttons or plastic parts anywhere on this design β a drop bear’s ears and fangs are quite enough. The only sewing in the whole pattern is weaving in your ends.
π SIZES
Child: to fit head about 46β52 cm (hat measures 40 cm around x 20 cm tall β the ribbed brim stretches to fit). Adult: to fit head about 54β59 cm (51.4 cm around x 24.2 cm tall). 7 fangs on the Child, 9 on the Adult, each with its exact start stitch listed.
π§Ά YOU WILL NEED
Chunky (12 ply / bulky) yarn: Koala Grey β Child about 70 m (1 x 50 g ball), Adult about 102 m (2 balls); Fang White β about 4 m, one ball or scraps does both sizes (full stitch-counted yarn table, in metres, yards, grams and balls for both sizes, up front in the pattern). Plus 6.0 mm needles (circular + DPNs or magic loop), stitch markers, a yarn needle and scissors. Gauge: 14 sts x 19 rows = 10 cm stockinette.
