We’re Al and Tina, an Aussie family shop, and this first volume of our crochet rug patterns pairs two generous floor pieces in the colours of an Australian garden — soft sage green and natural cream. The mandala rug blooms out from a plain cream centre into ring after ring of petal shells, while the striped mat works up in a relaxing rhythm of cream eyelet bands and sage stripes. Both are crocheted in bulky cotton on a big 8.0 mm hook, so they grow satisfyingly fast — honest weekend-to-weekend projects, even if you’ve never crocheted a rug before.

Skill level: confident beginner and up. You’ll need double crochet (UK treble), single crochet, chains and working in the round — and every petal and eyelet is explained stitch by stitch as you reach it.
