Description
Kangaroo Road Sign Wall Hanging — Crochet Pattern (PDF download)
The most Australian warning sign of all, reborn as a tapestry-crochet wall hanging. That yellow diamond hangs on fences and posts the length of every Aussie road trip — now he can hang in your hallway, on a wooden dowel with a swingy tassel fringe, and he never has to dodge a single car.
This is a full tapestry-crochet pattern, worked in single crochet with all three yarns carried inside the stitches, so the back stays tidy with no floats. The kangaroo is charted stitch by stitch from the real warning-sign silhouette — tail sweeping left to a fine point, one ear up, forepaw tucked at his chest, standing on his big hind foot, with the little yellow eyelet at his chest exactly where the silhouette puts it.
Finished size: about 50 cm wide × 60 cm long including the fringe (crocheted body about 50 × 53 cm from dowel to bottom edge). The picture panel is 90 stitches × 95 rows.
What’s in the 9-page PDF:
• Full-page colour chart (90 × 95) with numbered axes
• Every row also written out in full — chart and written rows are generated from the same chart data, so they can never disagree
• Yarn totals table up front, counted from the chart itself: metres, yards, grams and 50 g balls per colour, including the carried yarn, the sleeve flap, the border and every fringe strand
• Tapestry technique guide — carrying colours, clean colour changes, keeping the back tidy
• Sleeve flap, border and fringe instructions with every count given (48 tassels, worked in a repeating Warm Stone / Sign Yellow / Black order)
• Blocking, making-up and hanging instructions
You will need: DK (8 ply) cotton — Warm Stone 226 m (3 × 50 g balls), Sign Yellow 139 m (2 balls), Black 95 m (2 balls); 7 balls, 460 m in total. 4.0 mm crochet hook. Gauge: 19 stitches × 20 rows = 10 cm in single crochet. Yarn needle, scissors, pins for blocking. The dowel or straight branch for hanging (about 60 cm) is buyer-supplied — a lovely excuse for a beach or bush walk to find the perfect stick.
Skill level: confident beginner and up. The stitches are the plainest in crochet; the only concentration is following the chart. Written in US terms throughout, with the UK/Australian translation given (every “sc” here is a UK/AU double crochet).
Made by our Aussie family shop, where the road sign series is close to our hearts — the same charted kangaroo also appears in our Kangaroo Road Sign Cushion Cover knitting pattern, and if you love a handmade wall, look for our Koala Macrame Wall Hanging and Tree of Life Macrame Wall Hanging too.
