Three little angels made to hang — and every one of them is FLAT. No cones, no tubes, no standing up: these are appliqué-style angels, worked in flat pieces and sewn together, so they hang sweetly against a tree branch, a window or a wall — and each one is built a completely different way.
THE THREE ORNAMENTS
1. CLASSIC BELL ANGEL — about 12.2 cm (4.8 in). Her body is a flat bell-shaped panel worked in single crochet rows from a width chart, made TWICE — front and back — and joined by a gold single crochet edging worked through both layers with a whisper of stuffing inside. She has a gold waistband row across her front, a head made of two flat discs sewn together, a brown hair cap, flat crocheted wings, and a crocheted gold halo on a short stem — her hanging loop rises from the stem.
2. MOTIF ANGEL — about 9.5 cm (3.7 in). She is assembled from separate flat motifs: a round double crochet skirt (two discs sewn together with a gold joining edging), a small flat triangle bodice, and a smaller disc head with a hair cap and a tiny crocheted bun. Her flat gold halo ring is sewn flat to her cap and her hanging loop is threaded through it. Plain oval wings finish her back.
3. FILET LACE ANGEL — about 12.7 cm (5 in). Her whole body is ONE flat panel of filet crochet — open wattle gold mesh widening from her shoulders to her hem, with a cream heart worked in filled blocks at the centre of her skirt, and a cream edging finished with a counted scallop round. A flat disc head is sewn to the panel’s top, small oval wings sit at her back, and she has NO halo: she hangs by a crocheted loop from her head alone. The panel takes no stuffing at all.
Every face is embroidered — two tiny closed curves for eyes, stitched with yarn. No plastic safety eyes, no buttons, no wire anywhere. Every hanging loop is crocheted in; there are no ribbons or metal hooks to buy. The two-layer angels hold their soft padded shape from their sewn seams; the filet angel hangs flat as lace should — a gentle press under a cloth is all she ever asks.

YARN AND SIZES
DK (8-ply) cotton with a 4.0 mm hook; gauge 20 sc sts x 24 rows = 10 cm (one filet block measures about 1.15 cm across). Five colours: Cream, White, Wattle Gold, Skin Tone and Soft Brown. The whole set of three takes 2,332 stitches and about 68.6 m (75 yards) of yarn — ONE 50 g ball of each colour makes all three angels with yarn to spare. You will also need a tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers and a small handful of toy stuffing for the Bell and Motif angels only.
SAFETY
These are hanging decorations, not toys. Hang them out of reach of children under 3, and check loops and seams before hanging each year. Every piece is sewn on — there are no detachable parts — but a decoration is not made to be chewed or slept with.
