Description
A Thanksgiving turkey with a difference — Tom is an Australian brush turkey, and he comes with his own mound nest and four speckled eggs. The real brush turkey is the Aussie bush’s great engineer: the male rakes up a huge mound of leaf litter, the rotting leaves warm the eggs buried inside, and he patrols his mound for months, testing the temperature with his beak. Tom has the full brush-turkey kit: charcoal plumage, a bare bright-red head, a small black beak, the species’ famous long two-lobe yellow wattle, strong litter-raking legs, and a magnificent upright fan tail of nine flat feathers. He stands in a chunky two-tone nest, guarding four cream eggs speckled with embroidered brown flecks.
THE THREE DESIGNS
• Brush Turkey — approx 26 cm tall displayed standing in his nest (the bird himself is approx 24 cm, with a plump body approx 9 cm across). Plump body and separate neck tube worked in the round, big round red head, two flat side wings, legs with three-toed feet, and the nine-feather fan — 3 Long, 4 Medium, 2 Short — each feather a flat row-worked leaf with a slip-stitched centre ridge, sewn into a fan at his back.
• Mound Nest — approx 29 cm across, worked in chunky double crochet with the yarn held double, alternating Bark Brown and Olive rounds with a rippled slip-stitch rim. Quick, rustic, and exactly the right scale for Tom to stand in.
• Speckled Eggs ×4 — approx 6 cm long, in Egg Cream, with the brown speckles added afterwards as embroidered French-knot flecks — described honestly in the pattern, stitch for stitch, just as the photos show.
Every part is built its own way — round-worked body and head, flat row-worked wings, wattle lobes and feathers, chunky double-strand nest — so the set looks crafted, never cloned.
EMBROIDERED FACE, NO PLASTIC PARTS
• Tom’s eyes and his determined brows are embroidered in black yarn, placed by round and stitch in the pattern’s face map
• There are no plastic safety eyes, no buttons and no beads anywhere in this design — nothing hard to work loose
• The beak is a small crocheted cone, sewn on; the wattle is two soft crocheted lobes hanging side by side

• US terms with UK equivalents throughout
YARN & SIZES
DK (8 ply) cotton and two hooks — 4.0 mm for the turkey and eggs, 6.0 mm for the nest (worked with the yarn held double). One 50 g ball (approx 115 m) of each of the seven colours makes the whole pack: Charcoal, Brush-Turkey Red, Wattle Yellow, Black, Egg Cream, Bark Brown and Olive, plus about 80 g of toy stuffing. Tom displays at approx 26 cm tall in his nest; the nest is approx 29 cm across; the eggs are approx 6 cm long.
SKILL LEVEL
Confident beginner and up. If you can work single crochet in a spiral, increase and decrease, and are happy to sew parts together, you can make Tom — the nest is simple chunky double crochet, and every part of the bird is fully counted.
