π¦ DROP BEAR MUG COZY β CROCHET PATTERN (PDF DOWNLOAD)
Every Aussie knows the warning: never walk under a gum tree without looking up. The drop bear β the koala’s fanged, drop-from-above cousin β is our favourite national tall tale, and now he has a job: guarding your cuppa. This cozy wraps your mug in bold stripes of deep brown and golden yellow (yes, the Vegemite colours β the very shades of the breakfast spread you’re meant to smear behind your ears to keep him away), with the bear’s grey face parked right on the front, amber eyes glinting and fangs out.
The body is simple striped half double crochet worked flat β a relaxing evening make β and it fastens at the back with a crocheted button and loop, leaving the handle free. Two sizes are included: Standard for the everyday mug and Large for tall and travel mugs.
β HONEST DETAILS
β’ The face is an APPLIQUΓ: a separate crocheted grey disc with its own little ears, a crocheted oval nose and two tiny crocheted fangs, stitched onto the front of the cozy. That stitched-on construction is exactly what gives him his cheeky raised look β and the pattern shows you where every piece goes.
β’ The eyes, brows and mouth are embroidered with yarn. There are no plastic or safety eyes, no beads, and no bought button β even the button is crocheted (a small firm ball), and the pattern includes it.
β’ Cotton yarn means he washes happily and keeps your drink warm and your hands cool.
π FINISHED SIZES
Standard: panel 21.1 Γ 10.0 cm, fits a mug about 8 cm across (about 25 cm around), leaving about 4 cm open at the back for the handle.
Large: panel 25.6 Γ 11.4 cm, fits a large or travel mug about 9.3 cm across (about 29 cm around), leaving about 3.7 cm for the handle.
The button loop has a gentle stretch, so there’s wiggle room either way β and the pattern explains how to adjust the width for an in-between mug.
π§Ά YOU WILL NEED
DK (8 ply) cotton: Deep Brown about 12 m (Standard) / 17 m (Large), Golden Yellow about 7 m / 9 m, Soft Grey about 6 m, and small scrap amounts of Black, White and Amber for the face and embroidery β one 50 g ball of each colour is plenty for either size (full stitch-counted yarn table inside the pattern). Plus a 4.0 mm hook, yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers and a mug to fit-test.
π WHAT YOU GET
An 11-page PDF pattern with both sizes written out in full, row by row, a stitch-counted yarn table up front, counted instructions for the button and loop closure, the face disc, ears, nose and fangs, and a step-by-step embroidery guide for the eyes, brows and mouth. US crochet terms. Confident-beginner friendly.
