These twelve were designed for the way Christmas actually happens in Australia — lunch outside, a surf before the ham, an esky that somebody has to guard, and fairy lights that fight back. They make wonderful Christmas gifts, market-stall makes and table decorations — knit a gnome to match its human (the esky guardian and the pavlova maker are in every family) and watch it become the present everybody talks about. Finished gnomes also string beautifully along a mantel or fill a festive centrepiece.
Skill level: Confident beginner. DK (8-ply) yarn, 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles, knitted in the round (flat pieces are clearly marked "worked flat"). Finished size: about 15 cm (6 in) body, 28 cm (11 in) total with tall hat.
