🌟 AUSSIE COLOUR DOILIES & COASTER-DOILIES — CROCHET PATTERNS 🍃
Southern Cross · Gum Leaf · Four Matching Coasters
After the classic white thread lace of our flora and fauna doilies, here is the colour set: two modern doilies and four matching coaster-doilies, all worked in sturdy, washable DK cotton on a 4.00 mm hook.
⭐ SOUTHERN CROSS DOILY — about 28 cm across, 28 rounds
A deep navy field carrying the Southern Cross in white — and these are the real stars in their real places. The chart was drawn from the constellation itself, in the arrangement on the Australian flag: Gamma at the top, Alpha at the bottom, Beta and Delta at the ends of the crossbar, and little Epsilon tucked between Alpha and Delta, worked in just two stitches exactly where the sky puts it. The field is tapestry single crochet from generated run lists (every colour change written out), ringed with wattle gold and navy, a gold mesh round, and a sky-blue scallop edge tipped with gold picots.
🍃 GUM LEAF DOILY — about 26 cm across, 20 rounds plus 8 leaves
Cream openwork with a ring of eight gum leaves — four sage green, four grey-green — each leaf a shaped motif worked flat from a width chart (10 rows, stem and centre vein included), then sewn around the doily. A sage ring, a grey-green ring and a picot scallop edge tie the palette together.
🧺 COASTER-DOILIES — about 12 cm each, make 2 of each
Both designs re-charted at coaster scale: the Southern Cross coaster keeps all five stars in their true positions (Epsilon is a single white stitch — the making of the design), and the gum leaf coaster carries one mini leaf at its centre. Flat, thick and washable — made for real glasses and real teapots.
WHAT YOU GET
✔ Instant-download PDF, 21 pages
✔ Full written rounds for both doilies and both coasters — every round with its stitch count in brackets, and every star-field colour change listed stitch by stitch
✔ Stitch charts drawn from the same data as the written rounds: the two polar star charts, both leaf width charts and design views of every piece
✔ A star table giving each of the five stars its clock position, its distance from the centre and its chart stitch count — check your finished cross against the real constellation
✔ Yarn totals table UP FRONT: one 50 g ball of each of the seven colours (about 207 m in total) makes the whole set, with per-design and per-colour metres, yards and grams
✔ Tapestry colourwork guide: carrying yarn, changing colours, keeping the back tidy
✔ Blocking instructions written for colour work — how to pin the cross square — plus care notes
✔ US crochet terms with UK equivalents
SKILL LEVEL: Confident intermediate — comfortable working in the round, changing colours and reading stitch counts. Every count is checked, so if a round doesn’t sit right, your bracket count will tell you where.
YOU’LL NEED: DK (8 ply) cotton in Deep Navy, White, Wattle Gold, Sky Blue, Cream, Sage Green and Grey-Green (one 50 g ball of each), 4.00 mm crochet hook, yarn needle, pins and a blocking surface.
A note on the stars: the Southern Cross on this doily is not a scatter of decorative stars. The positions come from the actual coordinates of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon Crucis — if you hold the finished doily up to the night sky, the cross matches.
